About NAPM
Memo to Prospective Members
The U.S. Postal Service introduced worksharing in the late 1970s when it offered a one cent discount for mailpieces presorted in accordance with its requirements. Worksharing has grown significantly over the years and its effectiveness has been recognized by continuous incentive increases for prebarcoded/presorted mail. Members of this Association now presort and barcode over 27 billion pieces of First Class Mail annually.
The National Association of Presort Mailers was founded in 1984 for the purpose of providing a channel of communications among members concerning regulations, policies, plans and actions, which impact the presort/prebarcoding industry and to:
- Represent the interests of all presort/prebarcoding mailers;
- Improve communications between the presort mailing industry and the U.S. Postal Service and the U.S. Congress;
- Promote professional and ethical business practices among members;
- Develop and improve USPS worksharing programs to produce cost savings and service benefits for the Postal Service and our industry.
We have established an excellent working relationship with the USPS management and staff, the Postal Rate Commission and other associations of mailers. The Association is represented on the Mailers Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) – a joint Industry and Postal Service organization. Our representatives to MTAC actively participate in established subcommittees and special ad hoc groups.
Presort and prebarcoding have proven to be mutually beneficial to both the U.S. Postal Service and mailers. By working together with a cooperative spirit, the net postage savings have been and will continue to be significant. Automation has become the key to cost-effective mail processing and the private sector has invested substantially in presort/prebarcoding systems. Today, virtually all of our members have added automated equipment to their operations.
To succeed in fulfilling the Association’s purpose and objectives, we need the support of all companies and individuals who have an interest in the future of our industry and in protecting their investment and cost savings in presort and prebarcoding. Accordingly, we solicit your participation as a member now so that we can continue to enhance the worksharing programs through a strong and effective association.
